What can decompression therapy do for a person who has disc problems in his or her low back region? Decompression or DTS is a non-surgical solution to disc injury which involves a gentle stretching of the lumbar spine in an accordion-type fashion. This back and forth motion enables motion to increase in the low back and relieves pressure off the disc's in the lumbar spine. When the pressure is reduces on the disc's the nerve symptoms can be alleviated. The therapy can last from 15 to 25 minutes depending on patient tolerance. This therapy is non- painful and the amount of traction on the lumbar spine is to the patient's tolerance level. Often times the patients are able to take more and more amounts of traction load as their symptoms become less and less. DTS is one of the best non-surgical pain free therapies available to those patients who have exhausted all other forms of treatment for the low back right up to having low back surgery. It has been my experience that DTS coupled with chiropractic therapy greatly helps reduce the painful symptoms of the low back region due to disc involvement.
